Creating a Favorite

leo_techtip_favorites

Would you like to save a website and come back to it later or do you visit the same site frequently? Creating a favorite (or bookmark) is one way you can access websites you have visited previously with just the click of a button. Here are directions to create favorites using common internet browsers. Assume all clicks are a left mouse click unless we specify otherwise.

Google Chrome Web Browser
When using Google Chrome (4 color icon that looks like a ball) to access the internet, and you are on a website you want to save, click on the star outline in the upper right corner of your screen. [Red arrow in second picture below.]

When you do this, a pop up will appear so you can add the bookmark. The name of the bookmark is on the top line and the folder where it will be saved is on the second line. You can click in the first line which is highlighted and rename your bookmark to something you recognize if you wish or you can leave the default name. You can leave the default folder as bookmarks bar unless you wish to further organize your bookmarks by creating additional folders. Click the Done button when finished.

The bookmark will then be listed in your bookmark bar at the top of your screen [grey bar under search bar-shown with yellow arrow].

Another way to create a bookmark is to click on the icon at the front of the web address and drag it to the bookmarks bar. In the above picture you would click on the page icon and drag this click into the grey bookmarks bar.

If your bookmark bar is not showing, click on the 3 horizontal line icon just to the right of the star icon in the upper right corner. [Shown with blue arrow.]

chrome favorites

A menu will come down. Hover over the ‘Bookmarks’ choice and another menu will pop up. Click on the ‘Show bookmarks bar’ choice. The bookmark bar will appear directly under the search bar.
If you decide you do not want this bar showing, go back to the 3 line menu again [blue arrow] and unclick ‘Show bookmarks bar’ and the bar will disappear.

To remove a bookmark, right click on the link in the bookmark bar and choose Delete from the drop down menu to delete the icon and bookmark.

Mozilla Firefox Web Browser
If you use Mozilla Firefox (blue and orange icon) to access the internet, and you want to save a website click on the star to the right of your search box. [Shown with red arrow.] Your bookmark will then be saved.

Click on the clipboard icon [shown with blue arrow] and move your cursor down to the Recently Bookmarked choice (shown below). You will see everything you have recently bookmarked. If you click on your new bookmark and drag it out of the recently bookmarked folder to your bookmark bar, you will be able to click on the button to access the site quickly.

Another way to create a bookmark is to click on the icon in front of the web address and drag it to the bookmarks bar. In the above picture you would type the name of your website in the area where it says “Search or enter address”. When the website loads, click on the icon in front of the web address and drag it to the bookmarks bar.

If your bookmarks bar is not shown go to View at the top of your screen and hover over the Toolbars selection and click on the Bookmarks Toolbar so it has a check mark in front of it. (If you do not have the menu options of File, Edit, View, etc. showing at the top of your screen press the ALT button to make these menus appear.) If you do not want the Bookmark toolbar showing, go to View, Toolbars, and click again on Bookmarks Toolbar so there is not a check mark in front of it.

If you ever want to delete a bookmark, right click on the item to delete, move your cursor down to the Delete choice and click on it. The bookmark will then be removed.

Internet Explorer Web Browser
If you use Internet Explorer (blue e icon) to access the internet, and want to save a website, click on the star icon in the upper right corner of your screen. [Shown with red arrow.] The star will turn yellow and a window will appear.

Inside this window is a button called Add to Favorites. [Shown with blue arrow.] When you click on this button, a box pops up in the middle of the screen. You can keep the name of the bookmark or you can give it a new name.

You can also choose where the favorite is saved. If you would like it to appear in your Favorites Bar, then click within the drop down to choose Favorites Bar; otherwise it will be listed in the Favorites menu. [Shown below with yellow arrow.]

If you choose to save the page to your Favorites menu and not the Favorites Bar, the bookmark is still saved but needs to be accessed using the Favorites menu option found at the top of your screen. If your the menus at the top of the screen like File, Edit, View, and Favorites are missing from the top of the screen, press the ALT button to make these menus appear. To make these menus to stay permanently, please contact us and we will walk you through this process.

Another way to create a bookmark is to click on the icon at the front of the web address and drag it to the bookmarks bar. In the above picture you would click on the butterfly icon and drag this click into the bookmarks bar.

If you ever want to delete a bookmark, right click on the link in the bookmarks bar [grey bar at top of screen-indicated with orange arrow in top picture], move your cursor down to the Delete choice and click on it. The bookmark will then be removed.

Safari Web Browser

If you use Safari (compass icon on Mac) to access the internet, and want to save a website press command and D on your keyboard. A pop up appears to add the page to your Favorites Bar. [Shown below.] You can change the name to something else if you wish or you can leave the default name. [Note: If a tag line is in the bar after the name of the website, the tag line will also be saved as part of the bookmark name.] Click on the Add button to save the bookmark.

To delete a bookmark from the Favorites Bar, hold down the control button and click the mouse on top of the current bookmark in the Favorites Bar. This will open a menu. Move your cursor to the right within the window and down to the word Delete. There should be a blue bar highlighting this word so you know you will select it. Click on the word Delete and the bookmark has been removed.

You can also make folders for favorites which will group them together just like you would make folders on your computer to group documents together. If you would like help setting this up or have any other questions about this article please feel free to contact our office.
